Steering Committee

Placemaking Canada is guided by a volunteer Steering Committee that helps to plan events, promote the organization’s work, and provide overall direction. As part of our overall goal to grow and strengthen the organization, we’re looking to renew and expand the Steering Committee while we establish a more permanent organizational structure.

If you’re interested in placemaking and public space matters and you’d like to support the organization during this transitional period, please read on!

Steering Committee Duties

The Committee is intended to be an interim governance body for Placemaking Canada that can help with the following tasks:

  1. Identifying and assisting with the establishment of a preferred permanent governance model for Placemaking Canada;

  2. Assisting with near-term activities, including online and in-person events/gatherings and our communities of practice;

  3. Supporting other near-term communications, partnership, or advocacy-related activities.

We anticipate the interim Steering Committee being in place for approximately 12-18 months (starting January 2025) – while a permanent organizational structure is established.

Improving representation

One of our goals is to assemble a steering committee that reflects a diverse array of perspectives on placemaking and public space issues in Canada –with attention to:

  • Geographic representation (different parts of the country, larger and smaller urban areas or rural communities);

  • Background (including gender, ethnicity, age, ability, and/or other factors that influence the lived experience of public space);

  • Placemaking/public space practice (professional or volunteer work with public space or placemaking – e.g. community group member, planner, artist, engineer, academic, event planner, policy maker, business owner, healthcare practitioner, etc.);

  • A mix of skills and background experiences appropriate to the Steering Committee tasks outlined above.

What to expect

We are looking to recruit approximately 12 people to the Steering Committee, balancing (as best possible) for the aforementioned factors. A few other important details:

  • Meetings will be conducted online (via Zoom) and held approximately once a month – with a regular time/date to be determined at the first session (in consultation with Steering Committee members);

  • In addition to meetings, there will be the need for additional work to advance the various activities of Placemaking Canada (e.g., research into governance matters, programming matters, etc.);

  • Time commitment may vary, but we estimate 1-2 hours a week per Committee member;

  • Committee activities, including meeting coordination, will be supported by the current Placemaking Canada team;

  • Meetings and correspondence will be held in English.
